Stories we should be thinking about

A few finance and related stories we need to be thinking about before Monday morning:

Macro matters:

A really good link on some of the strains on the ECB's QE policy from the lower purchasing band of a -20bps yield due to the magnitude of negative yield bonds

Interesting to see the differential between countries on the maturity of bonds being purchased.

Interesting rising correlation between the euro and the VIX...

...which feels right to me.  A rising euro means a falling dollar which implies a fading US economy.  Not beyond the realms of possibility...

Robert Main's weekly has an interesting chart on corn with an observation I would agree with...

Worth reading this report on US crops acreage too for background info.

Talking about interesting reports I liked this one on the global housing market which shows some of the pressures and strains in the system for the average consumer:

Talking about property:
The biggest property sale since the latest squeeze on mortgages proved a sell-out as Li Ka-shing's CK Hutchison sold 740 flats at its Hemera project in Tseung Kwan O after offering discounts of 20 per cent.

If you get your magnifying glass out you will see a tiny recent Russia foreign reserves uplift... (sourced from here):

Thoughtful on longer-term returns (link here).  Especially on the differential in returns between the US...

...the UK...
...and strikingly Japan:

Interesting review of the Trans-Pacific Partnership here: 'The TPP is about increasing protection in the form of stronger and longer patent and copyright protection' and not so much about free trade per se.  Could well be a fast-track vote on this shortly in the US Congress...

Company-related observations:

Who knew this about Alibaba? 'SAIC Motor Corp. will introduce a connected car jointly developed with Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. in August 2016, part of efforts by Chinese automakers to integrate Internet technology with vehicles' (link here).  Google-esque...

Fascinating write-up (link here) on the fakery inherent in Alibaba's ordering:

Talking about Google are they looking to raise the competition more towards the telecoms companies: 'Google is in talks with Hutchison Whampoa for a deal  that would allow Americans to use their phones abroad at no extra cost. Hutchison could give Google access to mobile service in the UK, Ireland, Italy, and several more markets'

The compensation for non-voting Google shareholders could be over US$500m as per this link. A big price to pay for 'control'!

A VERY GOOD read: 'Surface 3 And Apple Watch - Red Oceans Vs. Blue Oceans' for all Microsoft and Apple watchers.  Link here.

Want yield asks Seeking Alpha? 'T, PM, VZ, DUK, STX, GM, GE, MCD, CAT and DOW are 10 “high-quality” S&P 500 stocks with dividend yields of 3.5-5.7% and promising growth potential, Barron’s says, citing Howard Silverblatt of Standard & Poor’s Financial Services...60 companies in the S&P 500 yield 3.5% or more, but the above stocks cover their dividends from estimated 2015 earnings. The list also excludes REITs and MLPs'.

My view?  PM, GE and DOW are particularly interesting to me...

Interesting in the Sunday Times that 'Kellogg has warned that its profits could be slashed by the international drive to clamp down on tax avoidance'.  I remain short the stock...

And finally...

The world's longest flights are?

'Five techniques to improve your luck'.  Really good link here.

Have a good week
