Stories we should be thinking about

A few finance and related stories we need to be thinking about before Monday morning:

Macro matters:

A good short piece from SoberLook on unreliable export data from China earlier this weekend which included this interesting Shibor rate chart below.  I agree not a good signal re the strength of economic growth prospects.

Worth watching out on Monday for the results of the Catalonia symbolic independence vote (unrecognised by the Spanish judiciary/political establishment).  Highly likely to be 'yes' I would have thought...but any spillover into the financial markets?

'The world is on the brink of a new Cold War. Some are even saying that it’s already begun,” Mr. Gorbachev said at an event marking the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, close to the city’s Brandenburg Gate...Mr. Gorbachev called for trust to be restored through dialogue with Moscow, and suggested the West should lift sanctions imposed against senior Russian officials'

The rouble has certainly been weak...

...and I am surprised that the Russian credit default swaps have not backed up versus the broader emerging markets more quickly:

More on the upcoming Swiss gold referendum later this month. Why is this important?  Well these statistics should show why?: 'The upcoming vote is being followed with some interest abroad too: the price of gold, down since 2012, might rise sharply if the SNB was obliged to buy 1,500 to 2,000 tonnes in the next few years. The annual global production of gold amounts to around 2,500-3,000 tonnes, and collectively central banks generally purchase less than 500 tonnes'

Nice silver related chart from @Smaulgld.

Silver certainly has some 'squeeze' capability...

...and some cautionary signals for dollar bulls.  Thoughtful article centred around this chart:

Another indicator that the US dollar bull run is not totally backed by fundamentals?

Interesting list of countries who are best or worst placed to absorb climate change issues

Uh oh 'according to the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, the logistics industry is 60,000 drivers short'.  A problem for Christmas?  Report here (paywall however).

Good to learn about ShareRadio whose website is here.  Good spot @toddwenning!

Company-related observations:

Nice S&P related charts -

According to Seeking Alpha 'Snapchat close to deal at $10-$12B valuation potential investors include Yahoo, private equity firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and others'.

After the market close on Friday Berkshire Hathaway Inc reported its book value per class A equivalent rose 7.1% to $144,542 as of September 30, 2014. Its shareholder’s equity increased by $15.6 billion since the beginning of this year. Nice write-up here.

Nice write-up on Eli Lilly here.  I agree with the conclusions after selling my shares (at a solid profit) earlier this year.

Interesting piece on BP here:

Certainly a high yielding area:
Interesting cigarette consumption chart.  Am long both Altria and Philip Morris International amongst other tobacco shares!

The Financial Times reports that 'US law firm Scott & Scott says it is in talks with several European institutional investors about filing legal claims against Tesco after it emerged in September that the retailer had misstated its profits by £263m'

And finally...

Always a classic...and obviously said in complete jest.  Nice link @MatadorNetwork

A bizarre headline...but apparently with some truth to it.  Thanks for pointing this out @MarkBrant1KM :

'China Killed 180k Dogs to Trade for Russian Su-27 Fighter Jet'

And finally...not 100% sure of the logical/clarity of this...!

 Have a good week
